RIP Combustion Engines: Japan Shows Off Cars of the Future
Japan’s flagship automakers will present their futuristic visions for the post-fossil fuel era at the Tokyo Motor Show that kicks off on Wednesday. If only the industry, reeling from a run of scandals, could forget about the here and now.
Japan’s once-impregnable reputation for quality vehicles has taken a battering. Nissan Motor Co. has just announced plans to suspend local car production and is under regulatory scrutiny after admitting it has used unauthorized safety inspectors. Auto industry supplier Kobe Steel Inc. has fessed up to forging data on aluminum and other materials going back decades. Takata Corp., whose exploding air bags were the subject of the industry’s biggest ever recall, filed for bankruptcy in June.
Even the auto show has had its dramas. Nissan President Hiroto Saikawa ceded chairmanship of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association two weeks ago to deal with the deepening crisis at his company, forcing Toyota Motor Corp. president Akio Toyoda to step in suddenly as overseer of the biennial event. Japanese automakers are aiming to use the show as a showcase for their latest technologies, everything from concept hydrogen-fueled cars to their latest redesigned electric vehicles boasting longer driving ranges.
“Recent scandals are pouring cold water on this year’s show and the impact is very negative,” said auto analyst Ken Miyao at consultancy Carnorama. “Tokyo’s show is a big consumer-oriented event and I won’t be surprised if some domestic consumers shy away from it this year.”

Carlos Ghosn's Protege Faces First Crisis With Nissan Japan Recall
Carlos Ghosn, one of the auto industry’s most celebrated turnaround artists, saved Nissan Motor Co. by managing himself out of numerous tight spots. Now his hand-picked successor faces a big test of his own, just six months into his tenure as Nissan’s chief executive officer.
In what Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa, 63, has called a “shocking" lapse, the automaker announced on Monday that it’s recalling 1.2 million vehicles in Japan after regulators discovered un-certified inspectors approved vehicle quality. The recall covers all models produced in Nissan factories in Japan for sale locally and will cost the company 25 billion yen ($222 million).
Less than 48 hours later, Nissan’s stock took a hit after the Kyodo news agency reported that the company allegedly falsified inspection documents to make it seem as if authorized inspectors had checked the new vehicles. The shares dropped. A Nissan spokesman declined to comment on the report.
“Saikawa should do everything he can to uncover the whole picture and tell the truth to the public,” said Ken Miyao, an analyst for auto research company Carnorama Japan.

Nissan to recall all new cars sold in Japan in last three years
YOKOHAMA (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T) will recall all 1.2 million new passenger cars it sold in Japan over the past three years after discovering final vehicle inspections were not performed by authorised technicians, it said on Monday.
The recall is the second major misconduct incident involving a Japanese automaker in as many years, after Mitsubishi Motors Corp (7211.T) admitted in April 2016 it had falsified the fuel economy for some of its domestic market models.
“This could turn out to be a serious issue depending on whether the misconduct was intentional or a simple oversight,” said Takeshi Miyao, managing director of consultancy Carnorama.

Nissan takes EV battle to Tesla with longer-range Leaf
CHIBA, Japan (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T) launched a revamped Leaf electric vehicle (EV) on Wednesday, going head-to-head with Tesla Inc’s (TSLA.O) Model 3 and hoping to blunt criticism of limited driving ranges undermining EVs’ mass-market appeal.
The automaker said it aims to “double, even triple” annual sales of the previous incarnation, jump-starting demand in major markets such as the United States, and packing new technologies to make up for a shorter driving range than rival offerings.
“As Tesla has entered the mid-sized EV market, “Nissan will have to compete on functions other than battery range, like automated functions” to stay on top of the market, said Takeshi Miyao, managing director of consultancy Carnorama.

China's GSR Nears $1 Billion Deal for Nissan Battery Unit
GSR Capital, a Chinese private equity firm with backing from the Hubei provincial government, is nearing a deal to acquire control of a Nissan Motor Co. rechargeable battery unit for about $1 billion, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
The firm is in advanced talks with Nissan about buying a stake in Automotive Energy Supply Corp., which makes the lithium-ion cells for the Japanese company’s Leaf electric car, the people said. The parties aim to announce an agreement within the next two weeks, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are confidential. The Hubei government-backed Yangtze River Industry Fund is contributing at least 20 percent of the GSR Capital fund doing the AESC deal, the people said.
“This deal would bring huge benefits to both sides,” said Takeshi Miyao, an analyst at Tokyo-based market researcher Carnorama. “China is planning to manufacture batteries in the country as they encourage use of electric vehicles and AESC would be a perfect target as it has good battery technology.”

Ghosn cedes Nissan CEO role to focus on alliance with Renault, Mitsubishi
TOKYO (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) said Carlos Ghosn will step aside as CEO after leading the company for 16 years, allowing him to concentrate on deploying his cost-cutting expertise across its alliance with Renault SA (RENA.PA) and newly added Mitsubishi Motors Corp (7211.T).
In handing over the helm to Hiroto Saikawa, a company veteran of 40 years, Ghosn ends years of speculation over when he would relinquish the top job at Japan’s No. 2 automaker amid investor concerns that he was stretching himself too thin.
Bringing Mitsubishi into the alliance last year has put the group’s annual combined sales at 9.3 million vehicles - close in size to industry leaders Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE).
“The timing is a bit surprising,” said Takeshi Miyao, Asia managing director at consultancy Carnorama. “It appears Ghosn has decided very quickly that Saikawa is the right person to lead the company.”

Nissan Savior Ghosn Hands Keys to New CEO to Focus on Alliance
Carlos Ghosn, one of the auto industry’s most celebrated turnaround artists, is relinquishing his CEO role at and turning over day-to-day control to Hiroto Saikawa as he focuses on strengthening the carmaker’s alliance with Renault SA and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.
The move caught some observers by surprise. Only last October, Nissan elevated Saikawa to the co-CEO position along side Ghosn. However, the strategic challenges facing Nissan and its French alliance partner Renault have prompted the 62-year-old executive to step back.
Ghosn continues on as chairman of Nissan and the CEO and chairman of Renault. He’s also chairman of Mitsubishi Motors, a strategic partner 34 percent owned by Nissan that’s trying to regain consumers’ trust from a months-long fuel economy scandal.
As for the Nissan management succession, one analyst was puzzled by the timing. “I’m not sure why Nissan announced a change in CEO from Carlos Ghosn to Saikawa-san at this moment,” said Takeshi Miyao of Tokyo-based market researcher Carnorama. “It is a big surprise for the industry.”

Ghosn steps back from Nissan to focus on Mitsubishi turnaround
Carlos Ghosn handed over the day-to-day running of Nissan Motor Co. to Hiroto Saikawa, who will take the mantle of president and chief executive officer while his long-time boss focuses on revamping struggling affiliate Mitsubishi Motors Corp.
TGhosn, 62, will remain chairman of Nissan, a title he also holds at alliance partners Renault SA and Mitsubishi Motors. He’ll stay as CEO of Renault as the transformation of the French carmaker isn’t finished, he said in an interview, with the current midterm plan ending in 2018. Saikawa will assume charge at the Japanese company April 1.
“There’s a point in time where you have to be realistic about how much things you do and you can do well. This is the trigger,” Ghosn said at Nissan’s headquarters in Yokohama, Japan on Thursday.
“Carlos Ghosn changed Nissan, especially reorganizing procurement -- it is a very important thing,” which makes Saikawa a good choice to lead Nissan, Takeshi Miyao, an analyst with Tokyo-based market researcher Carnorama, said by phone. “Saikawa-san’s background is in procurement. He has a very special intelligence and skill in a matter that’s very important for a carmaker.”

VW Takes Global Sales Crown From Toyota Amid Diesel Crisis
Volkswagen AG dethroned Toyota Motor Corp. last year to become the world’s best-selling automaker for the first time, propelled by surging demand in China which has been largely unaffected by the diesel-cheating scandal.
Volkswagen sold a record 10.3 million vehicles in 2016, outpacing its rival with a 3.8 percent gain from a year earlier. Toyota’s global sales, including its Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co. units, rose 0.2 percent to 10.2 million vehicles in 2016, the Japanese automaker said on Monday.
“Trump is a bigger risk for Toyota than for Volkswagen because the German carmaker has a small exposure to the U.S. market,” said Ken Miyao, an analyst at Tokyo-based market researcher Carnorama. “Toyota has made investment to build a new plant in Mexico and will have limited options to appeal to Trump.”

Takata’s $1 Billion Air-Bag Settlement Could Make a Sale Easier
Takata Corp.’s agreement to pay $1 billion to settle a criminal investigation removes a hurdle to the air-bag maker’s sale, which the company needs to continue operations and complete the biggest product recall in automotive history.
The Tokyo-based company admitted to hiding the deadly risks of its air bags for about 15 years and agreed to plead guilty to one criminal charge in the settlement, according to court papers. Separately, U.S. prosecutors charged three former Takata executives for their alleged roles in hiding the risks since 2000. The faulty air bags have been linked to at least 17 deaths worldwide.
“This at least gives some clarity to potential bidders,” said Ken Miyao, an analyst at Tokyo-based market researcher Carnorama. “But they also need to know how the recall costs with automakers will be split to make a final decision.”
